I Volunteered at a Food Drive – Here’s What Surprised Me

I’ve always liked the idea of volunteering but have felt too nervous to actually sign up. So, when I committed to volunteering at a local food drive outside of a grocery store last month, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. Spoiler alert – I’m really glad that I did.

The setup was simple: hand out a list of the food bank’s most‑needed items and collect donations as shoppers headed out. I was volunteering alongside two others, and their friendliness immediately put me at ease. Within minutes, the nerves faded and it started to feel fun.

After about 15 minutes, we received our first donation; a can of corn and a can of tuna. As the woman placed them on our table, she smiled and said, “Sorry, it isn’t much.” That moment really stuck with me, because as the day went on, I heard similar words from several people – but what they did not see were those items stacking up to become too much to fit on our table. It was the perfect example of how we are truly strongest when we come together. No donation is too small, and your impact does make a difference.

As the afternoon went on, more people stopped by. Some donated a single item; others offered full shopping bags. Before long, our table was overflowing, and we had to start moving food into larger bins for pickup.

One of the best parts about this day was connecting with others. Some who had once relied on the food bank and now wanted to give back, longtime volunteers happy to chat, and shoppers who simply thanked us for being there. Seeing that sense of community firsthand was incredibly heart‑warming.

By the end of the shift, I went home feeling proud, grateful, and inspired. Volunteering didn’t require a grand gesture or a huge commitment, just advocating for a good cause.

If you’ve ever thought about volunteering but felt unsure, I’d encourage you to give it a try. Whether you have an hour or a few hours to spare, your time really does make a difference. Sign up to volunteer and be part of something meaningful – you might be surprised by just how rewarding it feels.
